In my capacity of National Gender and Human Rights Expert at AUA Acopian Center for the Environment, I had all the pleasure (and fun) to be the co-host of Laura Prokić , who is the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coordinator of American University of Armenia and AUA Lecturer. Here, at #FocusSeries podcast of #AUA we discuss the University’s approach to creating a more #inclusive #environment. And let me just mention how much I admire the work that Laura and her colleagues have done so far to advance rights-based and gender-sensitive approaches within the academic environment! Leaving the link for the podcast in the comments.

A month ago, on September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan, after 9 months of blockade of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), proceeded to an intense land-to-land attack on Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh, which resulted in mass forced displacement of over 100 000 Armenians from their indigenous land.Attached is my speech, delivered on 22 September, at a side event parallel to the 54th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on the crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh.I shall once again emphasize, that the actions of Azerbaijan, including the events and the consequences of the attack of 19 September, amount to genocide against the Armenian population of Nagorno-Kabarakh. This has been stated on multiple occasions throughout the last 3 years by specialized international organizations, such Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, as well as scholars and practitioners, such as former ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo. The international community, international political bodies and institutions, international human rights organizations and groups shall provide adequate response to Azerbaijani aggression, including application of political and economic sanctions.https://lnkd.in/eQbWSXA8

One of this year's most fulfilling collaborations has been the work with the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment in the framework of its Waste Policy in Armenia (WPA) project. In the capacity of the Project's National Human Rights and Gender Expert, my collaboration with ACE focuses on the advancement of rights-based and gender-sensitive approaches in implementing waste management policy and infrastructure reforms. You can learn more about the project and the work of WPA team by following the Center's website https://ace.aua.am/The picture attached is from the Public Consultation on Waste Source Separation in Sevan, back in February, read more: https://shorturl.at/HMSW5

The Human Rights Research Center strictly condemns the installation by Azerbaijan of a concrete barrier to completely block the Lachin Corridor - the only road connecting Artsakh with Armenia and the outside world. Azerbaijan has also banned the entry of humanitarian cargo and the transportation of people in need of urgent medical assistance to Armenia accompanied by the Red Cross.Since June 23, Azerbaijan has blocked the Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting Artsakh to Armenia and the outside world, by installing a concrete barrier. The barrier, in addition to the illegal checkpoint & armored vehicles, completely isolates Artsakh, further aggravating the living and survival conditions of the people of Artsakh, who have been under siege for almost half a year.On 22 June, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted the resolution "Ensuring free and safe access through the Lachin Corridor" (see here: https://lnkd.in/ez3XGMab), inter alia calling on Azerbaijan to immediately comply with the judgment issued by the European Court of Human Rights on 22 December, 2021 (see here: bit.ly/431jJCR).It is important to recall that on 22 February of this year, the International Court of Justice issued a ruling obliging Azerbaijan "to take all measures to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions" (see here: bit.ly/3JyNJ2k).Azerbaijan's blocking of Lachin is part of the policy of ethnic cleansing of Artsakh Armenians, which we strongly condemn.Blocking of Lachin Corridor directly violates the terms of the Trilateral Statement of 9 November, 2020 and constitutes a gross and continuous violation of the rights of Artsakh Armenians. The Human Rights Research Center considers the opening of the Lachin Corridor as an issue of primary concern of all mandated stakeholders, in particular, the OSCE Minsk Group, the Council of Europe and the UN.Human Rights Research Center calls upon international political bodies and institutions, international human rights organizations and groups to undertake rapid proactive actions (including application of political and economic sanctions) and oblige those in control of the Lachin Corridor, namely Azerbaijani authorities and Russian peacekeeping forces, to restore and to ensure a free and secure passage in both directions along the Lachin Corridor without any preconditions.Access full statement here: https://shorturl.at/nqGLO#StopArstakhBlockade

Today is #InternationalDomesticWorkersDayAt a press conference today me, Sona Balasanyan and Elen Manaserian spoke about the issues of #domestic #workers in #Armenia. Domestic workers in Armenia face high risks of labour rights violation and exploitation. Existing legislative gaps prevent them from the realization of their right to freedom of assembly and unionizing, which makes them even more vulnerable.
